The Guest Code of Conduct at a Japanese Tea Ceremony

Updated: May 12, 2020

The Way of Tea or, as it’s more commonly known, the Japanese tea ceremony, is closer to a performance than it is anything else. The Japanese tea ceremony is a strong part of Japanese traditional culture.

While it’s now practised as a hobby or as part of a tourist experience package, traditional gardens culture centres and hotels, still offer authentic experiences for visitors.

I had the chance of witnessing a private ceremony conducted by a former regional culture minister in the prefecture of Chiba. Before starting the ceremony, we were taught how to act while the Tea Master performed the rituals.

Chances are that, as a visitor, you’ll witness the ceremony, rather than performing it. So this video may help give you an idea of how to respectfully act during the ritual.
